Common English Learning Mistakes
Sometimes the most important thing when learning something new is knowing what NOT to do.
Students learn spoken English the wrong way. Actually, most students don’t “learn” at all. That’s why when you try to have a simple conversation in English with them they fail. They might have a decent vocabulary. They might even know how to pass tests like the TOEIC, IELTS, or TOEFL, but they still can’t pass the “conversation test”. This course is all about changing that.
Here is a real story from a real business man in China. He’s a western guy. He hires ONLY Chinese girls that are married to a western guy. I asked him why and he said, “It’s simple, they know better English and more about western culture than students from even the top universities or those who have great test scores”.
He is like many businessmen. He wants REAL English, not some fake score or a piece of paper. I have friends working for large international companies. They are a little further behind because big companies have many rules, but they are starting to think similarly. These test scores are meaningless.
Anyway, I told you I’d talk about common mistakes so here I go. Students learn high level unimportant vocabulary when they should be focusing on the simple but important things.
Communication is not about grammar rules or trying to impress someone with your big vocabulary. It’s about understanding slang, which is what native speakers use all the time, and being able to express your main idea.
Your vocabulary will naturally get bigger over time and your grammar will improve a lot too from this method. Don’t worry, it isn’t necessary that you marry a western guy to learn to speak English well. Not at all! But you can get some tips from them. These people communicate in English all the time. No other courses do this. That’s why you see these university “English Majors” walking around with a paper degree and really bad spoken English.
People love making excuses about having a bad learning environment or a bad education system. These excuses are true but not helpful. People spend far too much time thinking of the problem and not enough time thinking about the solution. The solution is having a native speaker “in your pocket” on MP3 explaining exactly what native speakers say in real life. I’ll explain everything to you clearly and in a fun way you can understand. Most students make the mistake of talking about “how many hours they spent studying” or “how many words they learned“. It is silly; really silly. The ONLY thing that matters is whether or not you are improving your ability to have the kind of conversations that you will hear naturally in real life. That’s it. Who cares how much time it takes you to do something? It’s all about RESULTS!
Don’t make the same mistakes most people make unless you want the same poor results they get. It makes no sense to pay a lot of money to go to some English training school because it has a nice brand, pretty girl working behind the desk (maybe not too pretty but whatever), and “foreign teachers”.
These schools are terrible because they get very low quality teachers who aren’t even real teachers. They are just “white people”. It’s stupid but it’s the world we live in. We need to accept the truth.
You already know the truth, students from these schools learn very little. They learn even less from high school. The students aren’t stupid. The problem is that the system is really bad. It’s just so bad that it makes me feel crazy! I’m a native English speaker and I see this problem very clearly every day of my life.
Honestly, forget about what other students are doing because obviously their methods are not working very well. I know you can do much better. Please use your own brain and be reasonable enough to try something that makes sense to YOU! Don’t just follow other people. Following the crowd is exactly how to become a big loser in life.
If you want to speak better English, choose a better course, it’s as simple as that. Oh ya, you have to actually follow the course too. You can’t just buy it and then not use it. That is a waste too! Since you won’t feel bored, you won’t have any reason to quit.
Why would anyone quit something that is both fun and useful? They wouldn’t!
