Advice on How to Improve Spoken English

You are lucky to be alive in today’s modern world if you are learning English.  In the past, only really hard working or rich people could improve their English.  Even these hard working people in the recent had a hard time with spoken English.  You can just turn on the TV and listen to foreign professors speak English.  They often have a great vocabulary but their pronunciation is usually quite poor.  Anyone who is  a professor now probably worked really hard when they were young.  The problem was that they learned English before the internet.  Technology has changed everything.

If you use the right methods, it’s possible to sound like a native English speaker.  It’s true that most learners still don’t speak well, but most people are still using old methods.

I find it funny how often I hear how difficult it is to learn oral English.  I’ve heard that only kids can do it.  I’ve heard that it takes a long time.  I’ve heard almost every excuse I can think of.  The real truth is that you can improve your spoken English quickly if you pay attention to how you are doing it.  Here is a step by step approach.

1.  Get an Ipod or at least some decent speakers for your computer.

2.  Listen to 20 minutes of natural native English speaking everyday.  (This will train your ears and brain for the correct pronunciation).  You need to realize that babies are never taught how to speak well.  They just listen and their speaking eventually comes out perfectly.  It’s a little different with adults, but not too much.  Adults read too much and have this weird problem of thinking it’s not possible.  I’ve seen it so I know it’s possible

3.  Record yourself speaking and listen to your own voice.  Most people don’t do this but it really helps.  It might feel a bit weird at first, most people don’t even like to listen to their own voice in their own language.  Don’t worry, after a short time, you will become comfortable with this.  Tennis players watch themselves play on video.  It helps you see, or in this case, hear, what you are doing wrong.  You can correct yourself this way.

4.  Download native English podcasts for slang teaching.  These are interesting and very useful.  The BBC and VOA are free, but they are boring and sound more like machines than native speakers.  You don’t want to copy this style.  The great news is, you don’t have to pay much money now for the best material.  You can get hundreds of hours of cool stuff that I made on high quality recording equipment for only $9.  Our goal was to help the world speak real English for a very cheap price.  We have a great program that we’ve sold to thousands of people.  Less than 0.1% of the people have had a problem.  We get so many kind emails every day.  This is why we do it.  In the past, you had to buy CD’s or tapes.  They are expensive because someone has to make them.  Now everything can be downloaded and done on MP3 or PDF.  Take advantage of the better and cheaper English learning methods and you’ll be talking just like a native speaker in less than 3 months.
